Contribution and benefits

  • Alexandroupolis INGS constitutes a new natural gas entry point into Greece and an energy gateway to the European Markets in particular the markets of the SE European countries
  • The project is strategically located to attract a wide range of international suppliers, including the Eastern Mediterannean ones, whilst it is positioned on the crossroads of the energy corridors and pipelines of the area. More specifically:
    • It feeds directly into the Greek Natural Gas Transmission System (NNGS) to supply the Greek market.
    • It has direct access to the Bulgarian market via the planned Greek-Bulgarian Interconnector pipeline (IGB) and through the Bulgarian network to Romania, Serbia, FYROM and onwards to Hungary and to the markets of Eastern Europe through the existing or planned regional interconnectors e.g. Bulgaria-Romania, Bulgaria-Serbia. Bulgaria-FYROM, Romania-Hungary etc.
    • It has the potential to supply the large and fast growing Turkish market via reverse flow functionality of the existing Turkey-Greece interconnection pipeline.
    • It is able to connect, feed in and support the future South Corridor gas projects such as TAP and access the markets of the Western Balkans and of Western Europe.
  • With regards to the Greek Market, it contributes to the security of supply, promotes domestic competition with obvious benefits for the end consumers, improves the resilience and flexibility of the Greek NNGS and supports the energy sustainability and the emissions reduction targets.
  • With regards to the Balkan and the SE European countries in general, it provides access to diversified sources of supply and offers, via the interconnecting pipeline infrastructures an alternative route of supply, hence contributing to their security of supply and lifting their energy isolation.
  • The project enhances competition in the entire region and supports the development and operation of a competitive regional gas trading hub.
  • The project supports the European Union strategy for diversification of supply sources and routes and adds to the European energy security and integration.
