Environmental Benefits

Natural gas is more environmentally friendly than other fuels, such as oil or lignite, as air pollutants' (NOx, SOx) and greenhouse gases' (CO2emissions are significantly lower. 

With the substitution of polluting fuels, such as oil and lignite, by the eco-friendlier and cleaner natural gas, a significant reduction in air pollutants is achieved.  

More specifically the use of natural gas contributes to the reduction of the air pollutants since it has negligible SO2 emissions and 30% less NO emissions, 50% less CO emissions and 70% less MPs emissions than oil

At the same time, the use of natural gas reduces the greenhouse gases emissions (CO2) by 30% compared to oil and by up to 45% compared to coal. 

The project of Alexandroupolis INGS will have minimum impact on the environment both during its construction and more importantly during its operation, as it is specifically explained within the EIA approval decision where it is demonstrated that any effects will be temporary and fully reversible.

The project will have zero effect on the sensitive ecosystem of the Evros river delta and is located far away from any Natura 2000 area. 

By applying for the entire project modern technoly systems and Best Available Tecniques in line with the Greek and E.U. legislation, by systematically monitoring the operation of the infrastructure and by strictly controlling the emissions and waste through the project's internal systems and with the support of the competent authorities, it is ensured that Alexandroupolis INGS will be a project which is friendly and harmless for both the human society and the environment.
